PlumbingBy obtaining plumber certification, you can begin a long and enjoyable career in this rewarding field. In order to obtain your plumber certification, however, you will need to complete the minimum requirements as determined by your state.

For the most part, you can work toward plumber certification by completing an apprenticeship program. These programs are generally offered through either the union or through companies that are affiliated with the union, though nonunion contractor organizations may provide training as well. Some of the organizations that offer these programs and that will help with working toward obtaining plumber certification include:

  • The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada
  • The National Fire Sprinkler Association
  • The Mechanical Contractors Association of America
  • The Home Builders Institute of the National Association of Home Builders
  • The National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors
  • The Associated Builders and Contractors
In order to obtain plumber certification by first completing an apprenticeship, you will generally need to complete four to five years of training through the program. In addition to completing the apprenticeship, however, you will also need to complete classroom instruction if you wish to receive plumber certification.

There are many different courses you will need to take when working toward earning your plumber certification. Some of the courses you will need to take in order to get this plumber certification include blueprint reading, drafting, applied physics, mathematics, and safety. You will also need to learn about plumbing codes and other regulations when working toward your plumber certification.

While working as an apprentice in order to receive your plumber certification, you will learn how to use the tools of a plumber and you will gain special knowledge that can only be learned through hands on experience in the field.
